Simple search & search tips
- The simple search can be used as follows: enter one or more search terms in the input field and select your search area either before submitting the search or afterwards (please press the search button again).
Everything searches all references contained in the search engine.
Library catalog searches only the holdings of the Fachhochschule Dortmund library: printed media, DVDs, licensed e-books.
Article searches databases and other online sources for articles, contributions, e-media and other content. - If you enter several terms one after the other in the input field, they are linked by AND .
- No distinction is made between upper and lower case.
- You can abbreviate the search terms with an asterisk (*) by any number of characters or replace individual characters of the terms with a question mark (?) (so-called truncation).
Examples: Search term* / Tele?on - You can limit your search results using various filters (on the left-hand side). These filters are linked with AND .
Filter options:Branch, location within the branch, literature type, author, year of publication, keyword, language, availability, new acquisitions, possibly title of the journal.
Advanced search
- You put together your search query for an advanced search using elements that can be linked together to form the final search term.
Possible elements for the search fields are Title, author, keyword, shelf mark, ISBN, ISSN, series, abstract, table of contents. Any field searches all available fields for a specific term.
All search fields contain the same selection of so-called search attributes. - You can specify how the search word should appear in the corresponding search field: contains means that the search word does not have to appear alone in the field; is (exact) means that exactly the search word and nothing else must appear in the field; starts with means that the search word must appear in the field at the beginning.
- The individual blocks are linked to each other via link fields . There are AND, OR and NOT. These operators can be linked together as required.
You can find examples of various search queries in the Search syntax section. - No distinction is made between upper and lower case.
- You can abbreviate the search terms with an asterisk (*) by any number of characters or replace individual characters of the terms with a question mark (?) (so-called truncation).
Examples: Search term* / Tele?on
Index search
You can use the index search, for example, if
- the exact spelling of the term is not known
- the context of the search term is to be displayed
- index entries are to be displayed from the entered start term
Select a search area in which the index search is to be carried out, e.g. author. Enter a surname: all entries for persons with this or a similar surname will be displayed. You can select these entries and display the media linked to this name.
Search syntax
Linking search terms
You link your search terms in the advanced search using the logical operators AND, OR and NOT, which can also be combined with each other.
The use of the operators has different effects on the hit list:
Operator | Operator Description | Example terms | Result |
---|---|---|---|
AND | Display of field contents that contain both search terms (intersection). | Title: "Tree" AND Author: "Heine" |
All media are displayed that have "Baum" as the title and whose author is "Heine". |
OR | Display of field contents that contain both the one and the other search term (union). | Author: "Brecht" OR Year: "2005" |
All media are displayed whose author's name is either "Brecht" or which were published in 2005 |
NOT | Display of field contents that do not contain this search term (exclusion set). NOT must always be combined with AND or OR, except at the beginning of a search query. |
Author: "Brecht" AND title: "Threepenny Opera" NOT publisher: "Müller" |
All editions of The Threepenny Opera by the author Brecht that were not published by Müller-Verlag are displayed |
Truncation
You use truncation to extend the search to all terms that have certain properties:
- Terms that begin with a specific word (part of a word): Right truncation.
Example: Bundes* - Terms that end with a specific word or part of a word: Left truncation.
Example: *orthography - Terms that begin and end with certain word(s): Middle truncation.
Example: photogra*phy
It is mainly used to take into account different spellings and word variations of search terms, e.g. singular and plural forms.
RiO uses the following wildcards for truncation:
Wildcards | Effect | Example |
* | replaces several alphanumeric characters | Input right truncated: Inf* Result: InfoGuide, computer science, information etc. Input truncated in the middle: Gra*ic Result: Graphic, Graphic Input truncated left: *oto Result: Photo, Foto,Toto |
? | replaces exactly one alphanumeric character | Input: Kuw?it Result: Kuwait, Kuwait |
