The practical semester in the Bachelor's study program in Social Work

In the Bachelor's degree program in Social Work, the internship semester is a central part of the study program at Fachhochschule Dortmund.

First information about the internship semester

The knowledge and skills acquired in the first study phase can be assessed during the practical semester under supervision and implemented in professional action (theory-practice transfer).

To this end, the focus is on gaining professional experience in the respective field of work, testing forms of social work, legal and economic framework conditions of the practice site, processes of social work practice and the development of field and specialist knowledge.

The course of the internship semester

  • The internship semester usually takes place during the 4th semester and consists of a full-time internship.
  • The internship lasts 25 weeks, with a weekly work schedule of 32 hours spread over 4 days a week.
  • In addition to the internship, there is a seminar to support the practical training, comprising 2 SWS.
  • Supervision during the internship must be provided by social workers or social educators (Diplom, BA) with state certification.
  • It is possible to complete the internship abroad .
  • Upon request, the internship may also be completed on a part-time basis over 50 weeks, with a workload of 16 hours per week.
  • A practice report must be written as the module exam.
  • A practicum preparation seminar (K08) takes place in the 3rd semester.
