Picture by picture: Five decades in 30 minutes

The roots of Fachhochschule Dortmund go back to the end of the 19th century. It was officially founded in 1971 - at the beginning of a decade that was characterized by upheaval and change, but which also stood for batik looks, hippie manes and platform soles. In the 1970s, the era of PCs began with the founding of companies such as Apple and Microsoft, the first generation of video games came onto the market and The Godfather was shown in cinemas.

Rubik's cubes, the first CD player, the beginning of the Kohl era, the break-up of ABBA and big cities full of punks: There was a lot going on in the 80s. Ronald Reagan becomes US President and the Greens enter the Bundestag for the first time. The first space shuttle flies into space, walkmans and boomboxes become part of youth culture. IBM presents its first personal computer in 1981, of which Fachhochschule Dortmund also receives the first devices a few years later.

The 1990s are marked by the reunification of Germany, which is ceremoniously sealed on October 3, 1990. Sustainability gains in importance: the Green Dot is introduced for recyclable packaging. The Maastricht Treaty lays the foundations for the European Union. The first cell phones come onto the market, Forrest Gump and Titanic win an Oscar. The construction of the International Space Station (ISS) begins in space and Fachhochschule Dortmund has its first Equal Opportunities Officer on Earth.

The great chaos caused by the millennium bug does not materialize. The transition to the new millennium works almost smoothly from a technical point of view. The new decade is characterized by crises such as the attacks in New York and the financial crisis. At the same time, China's rapid rise as an industrialized nation leads to a new structure of the global economic order. Social networks such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and StudiVZ are popular with young people. Music is mostly passed on illegally online as mp3 files on so-called file-sharing networks. And the German band Tokio Hotel is storming the charts worldwide.

From around 2013, the Internet of Things became the accepted term for ubiquitous networking. 3D printers - already in use at Fachhochschule Dortmund - become suitable for mass production due to falling prices. People are becoming increasingly aware of climate change and need innovations and ideas. The South Korean rapper Psy reaches more than one billion views on YouTube for the first time with his song Gangnam Style in 2012 and is also the first video to break the two billion clicks mark in 2014. At the same time, Fachhochschule Dortmund reaches the mark of more than 12,000 students for the first time.
