3D Printing Creative Lab
How does a 3D printer actually work? Together, we’ll explore the exciting world of 3D printing. You’ll design your own personalized keychain and watch as it’s printed layer by layer right here on the spot. You’ll also get to get creative with 3D pens and make your own little works of art or figures. Plus, we’ll give you a short, kid-friendly introduction to how 3D printing works and where this technology is used in everyday life.
PLEASE NOTE: The event on August 29, 2026, is specifically for girls. On August 28, 2026, both girls and boys are welcome to participate.
When? Friday, August 28, 2026, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (for girls and boys) or Saturday, August 29, 2026, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (for girls only)

A finished product in no time—build something at the Duplo Factory!

How do factories manage to produce so many things in the blink of an eye and without any mistakes? You can find out for yourself at the “Logistics Innovation Lab”!
Working in teams, you’ll build small Duplo figures at different workstations. But you’ll soon realize: There’s a faster and smarter way to do this! Together, you’ll brainstorm clever ideas and test them out right away. How many figures can you make in five minutes? How few mistakes will you make? How many kids will you need to do this?
Become real factory researchers and design the perfect Duplo factory!

When Pipes Sing – Sound You Can See and Touch
Professor Dr. Alessandro Fortino (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering)
Sound is all around us—but we can’t see it. In this workshop, we’ll make the invisible audible and visible: Using simple tubes, we’ll build and tune our own musical instruments that begin to sing as soon as you swing them through the air. The faster you spin them, the higher the notes you’ll produce—and by the end, the whole group will play a real melody together.
Using professional measurement equipment from our acoustics lab—from a special microphone to an “artificial head” and an acoustic camera—we’ll suddenly see on the screen where a sound is coming from and what a tone really looks like. This way, we’ll experience firsthand how research is conducted at a university and why technology helps us understand the invisible world of sound.

The City Puzzlers! – Ideas for the City of Tomorrow

Imagine Dortmund is a giant jigsaw puzzle—and some pieces are still missing. That’s exactly what vacant lots are!
In this architecture workshop, you’ll become architects: You’ll develop creative ideas for filling the gaps with exciting, colorful, and vibrant buildings. But that’s not all: You’ll design facades with plants, plant trees along the streets, and discover how more nature can make the city cooler on hot days. Not only does this look beautiful, but it also helps make Dortmund a better place to live and prepares it for the future.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to space limitations, each child may be accompanied by no more than one adult!
