Students on the "Metal Building Envelopes" master's course have designed new interiors for the laboratories of the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (HRW) in Mülheim. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Helmut Hachul, three teams developed convincing solutions for the university, based on color exercises during their studies. In addition to the design of atmospheric interiors, structural and building physics issues relating to sound insulation and fire protection were also taken into account.
The proposed lightweight sheet steel solutions are reversible and can be adapted for future use. Sheet steel was chosen as a building material due to its versatility and robustness. It enabled the students to develop lightweight yet stable solutions that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. In addition, sheet steel is easy to process and can be recycled if necessary, which underlines the sustainable aspect of the design.
On June 24, a joint presentation took place in Mülheim, which was attended not only by the future user of the laboratories, Prof. Dr. Felix Meckmann, Professor of Construction Economics at the HRW, but also by his team and the President of the HRW, Prof. Dr. Susanne Staude. The feedback on site was unanimously laudatory, resulting in a first prize for the team of Marcella Ureta and Eva Paar and two second prizes for the team of Martin Vagedes and Fatma Dogan and the team of Lena Wahl, Alexander Amann and Jan Stöcker.
