Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rettkowski studierte Mikrotechnik an der Westfälischen Hochschule und Elektrotechnik & Informationstechnik an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Seine Promotion schloss er erfolgreich an der TU Dresden ab. Während der Promotion forschte er an heterogenen und partiell rekonfigurierbaren Systems-on-Chip für unterschiedliche Anwendungsgebiete, beispielsweise für die digitale Bildverarbeitung oder maschinelles Lernen. Nach Abschluss der Promotion arbeitete Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rettkowski für die Volkswagen Infotainment GmbH in Bochum. Dort war er an der Entwicklung und Integration des VW.os beteiligt. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rettkowski ist für das Fachgebiet Elektronik an der Fachhochschule Dortmund im Fachbereich Elektrotechnik im Jahr 2022 berufen worden.
