Profile

The ever-increasing networking of digital processes in Industry 4.0, together with the latest additive manufacturing processes ("3D printing"), enables the highly efficient production of individualized series products down to batch size 1.

As part of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences' investment and innovation program, personnel and material resources were therefore approved for the "3D PRINTING LAB" back in 2017. The AMRU (Additive Manufacturing Research Unit) research association was formed from this project in order to be able to jointly work on interdisciplinary additive manufacturing topics.

The successful establishment of the new 3D printing laboratory, a team from the Architecture and Mechanical Engineering departments, in 2017 created a new interdisciplinary working group that now has the opportunity to apply for and implement joint third-party funded projects.

In the construction industry, for example, modern 3D printing processes can be used in the future to support traditional manufacturing methods in order to efficiently produce components adapted to individual building situations. There is also enormous potential in combining building information modelling (BIM) with digitized, additive production. 3D-printed components are also becoming increasingly important in mechanical engineering thanks to improved printing processes and materials. As a result of these advances, there is currently a transition from printing pure prototypes and illustrative samples to mechanically and thermally resilient functional parts.

Students at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts also benefit from the equipment available in the "AMRU" research consortium, as it can be integrated into teaching, for example, or knowledge gained from research can be passed on to students straight away.
