About the teachingarea
Against the background of historical, socio-cultural and architectural-theoretical analyses, the special features of space, structure, function and design are taught, discussed and dealt with holistically in the "Building Theory and Design" course. Using exemplary buildings that demonstrate strategies that transcend epochs, it becomes clear that the design of buildings is always a creative and atmospheric response to a program in a specific environment. The close interaction between the user and his needs (building - individual) paired with the socio-cultural and urban planning context (building - community) is conveyed in a comprehensible way through various design tasks. The broad spectrum of lecture, design and analysis topics is organized typologically. Housing construction is the main focus in the first semesters. As the course progresses, more complex buildings with differentiated characteristics from the areas of public buildings, office and administrative buildings, cultural buildings, industrial buildings, commercial buildings and educational buildings are dealt with. From the large-scale urban planning to the details, the right questions must be asked of the task in order to develop an independent design approach - which does not fall back on ready-made solution patterns. Only an intensive, reflective design process leads to sustainable design results and, in successful cases, to a piece of architecture.
