A Synthetic Pandemic

Published

Artificial intelligence turns images from the coronavirus pandemic into abstract motifs.

Maximilian Riemer, a film student at Fachhochschule Dortmund, fed an artificial intelligence with image impressions from the coronavirus pandemic. This generated new, artistic and equally abstract images. In the Nordstadtgalerie, the generated images could be viewed both on the walls and in a 2x2 meter cube frame, also known as a "cube".

In the middle of the cube, visitors used an iPad to interact with the artificial intelligence themselves, allowing it to produce numerous new works of art.
Another part of the exhibition was a morph video that gave viewers an impression of how AI works. The video was projected onto a fabric banner printed with an image, creating a unique superimposition of image and video.
"A Synthetic Pandemic" was realized as the first online exhibition in the Galeri3D(Opens in a new tab)  and could thus also be admired digitally.
