From August 4 to 16, the Hochschule vor Ort transformed its Nordstadtgalerie (Bornstr. 142) into a kind of walk-in open bookcase. This "Nordstadtbibliothek" gave anyone interested free access to (specialist) literature, and there were also events on the topics of reading and libraries.
The project was supported by the library of the Fachhochschule Dortmund. The library contributed some of the books from its collection. In addition, UAS librarian Eva Schameitat talked about the diverse services, tasks and benefits of libraries at the launch event entitled "Library, what can you do?" on August 4, 2023 in the Nordstadtgalerie. The focus was on the work of the UAS library, where external users are also very welcome, but the exchange with the participants also revolved around the concept and role of libraries as a whole. University of Applied Sciences students expressed praise, but also constructive criticism regarding individual services offered by "their" library.
They also addressed questions such as: How can libraries appeal to younger target groups, especially young people? What innovative services are available in other countries and what can German libraries learn from them? How do libraries support families with limited financial resources? And what is actually so exciting about the work of librarians, media and information service specialists and other employees?
Other activities during the project period included a book swap and an event that invited visitors to present their own favorite books.
