About the person
Thomas Borchert studied civil engineering, specializing in structural engineering, at the University of Wuppertal, graduating with a Dipl.-Ing. degree, and received his doctorate in mechanics from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Siegen.
He teaches the subjects of statics, strength of materials and dynamics and conducts research in the field of mechanical resonators for broadband-efficient vibration and noise reduction in machines and vehicles.
Research
Resonators for vibration and noise reduction in machines and vehicles
In addition to the mathematical-analytical and numerical determination of mechanical state variables of machine components, the Laboratory for Mechanics and Machine Acoustics develops resonators for the reduction of machine and vehicle vibrations as well as for noise emission reduction.
The additively damped resonators simultaneously attenuate several interference frequencies up to closed frequency bands in the range between 10 Hz and 10 kHz, thereby avoiding disruptive secondary effects such as coupling vibration resonances.
The resonators can be realized in an adaptive or integrated design with little design and technical effort and can be tuned to resonance and operating vibration frequencies and their harmonics as well as to frequent broadband operating and resonance vibration spectra.
