Sexism is widespread: 78 percent of all women worldwide have experienced harassment in public spaces. This ranges from unwanted whistling, shouting, honking, commenting, also known as catcalling, to other sexually suggestive behavior - often in the middle of everyday life, on the street.
The campaign, which is being carried out by the City of Dortmund's Equal Opportunities Office in cooperation with Fachhochschule Dortmund's Film and Sound study program, addresses precisely this issue. It aims to raise awareness of sexism and encourage men in particular to reflect on and change their behavior, because: sexism results from gender injustice. It is not about positive attention, but often about power. Catcalling can be very stressful for those affected and can cause feelings of insecurity and worthlessness or even the adoption of avoidance strategies and changes in behavior.
The campaign consists of a cinema trailer, which can be seen as a supporting film in all Dortmund cinemas for three weeks from November 23, 2023, expressive posters that can be seen as city light posters at 45 locations in Dortmund city center, as well as sequences on the digital info screens in Dortmund's underground and suburban train stations.
The campaign is accompanied by the social media channels of the City of Dortmund, Fachhochschule Dortmund and Frank Buschmann, among others. The commercial will also be shown on the City of Dortmund's YouTube channel.
Maresa Feldmann, Equal Opportunities Officer for the City of Dortmund: "With this campaign, we want to raise awareness of the challenges that girls and women in particular face on a daily basis. Sexism is a form of discrimination that should not be tolerated and it is crucial that we work together as a society to create a respectful and equal environment."
