Can clothing transcend the boundaries of fashion and unfold as a form of art? No creative medium is as close to us as our clothes, but hypes and trends sometimes make them appear fast-moving, superficial and unsustainable, which contradicts the more universal messages of non(market)-compliant art. However, contemporary designers also combine haute couture with the means of fine art, thematize political messages and avant-garde concepts and thus blur the line between art and fashion. Similar to the performative practices of contemporary art, fashion art functions as a staging platform that questions social norms and rules and recreates bodies through visual narratives.

This KUNSTFORUM volume by Prof. Dr. Pamela C. Scorzin examines how clothing, art and creativity go hand in hand and become "fashion art". Essays by Pamela C. Scorzin, Natasha Degen and Janina Poesch discuss the similarities and differences between fashion design and performative art practices and provide insights into the artistic staging of fashion. In addition, discussions with Esther Perbandt, Wolfgang Joop and Michelle Elie provide an insight into the creative work on the threshold between art and fashion. The result is a comprehensive picture of the symbiotic relationship between the two disciplines and, last but not least, the question arises: is fashion even more art than art itself, as Andy Warhol claimed?
