"Creative Hub Monheim am Rhein. Use and expansion of the Mack pyramid"

Berlin. The Kulturkreis der deutschen Business Studies im BDI e. V. organizes the annual TRANSFORMATION architecture competition with changing cooperation partners. This year, the competition task was to create designs for the use and extension of the so-called Mack Pyramid. The current project partner was the city of Monheim am Rhein, which is strongly committed to art in public spaces and strives to firmly anchor it in Monheim's urban culture.
The Kulturkreis der deutschen Business Studies invited students from Fachhochschule Dortmund, HafenCity University Hamburg, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Wuppertal to take part in the competition. The winners have just been chosen:
1st place, endowed with 4,000 euros, goes to Ruth Martin and Malte Grobenstieg (University of Wuppertal) for the "H Eins" project. Anna Nölle (Fachhochschule Dortmund) was awarded 2nd place and 3,000 euros in prize money for her design "3 Elemente I Linie, Punkt, Fläche". Lucas Lütgenau and Simon Daudert (University of Wuppertal) won a special prize, also worth 3,000 euros, for their concept "Tiefenwirkung".
The high-caliber jury of experts selected the most successful projects for the use and expansion of the Mack Pyramid, which has existed since the 1990s and was designed in collaboration with the ZERO artist Heinz Mack and the architect Horst Schmitges, and which is to be made accessible to the public again after a long period of vacancy. The aim is to revitalize the site with art and culture and integrate it into the city. The task was to design a new building on the adjacent site, which would be connected to the pyramid by a successful open space design. The result should be a holistic structure for the creative industry: a new forum that combines art, culture, science, technology, business studies, education and production in the sense of a creative hub and is open to all residents and guests of the city.
Prof. Per Pedersen, jury chairman and managing director of Staab Architekten, on the jury's decision: "The winning entries in the student competition for the use and extension of the Mack Pyramid in Monheim am Rhein all showed an intensive examination of the context and the pyramid in different ways; sometimes as a landmark, sometimes as a strong urban design feature and not least as an 'archaeological excavation'. All the works were convincing due to their conceptual strength and outstanding workmanship, which can be interpreted as a sign and motivation for the city of Monheim am Rhein to develop this rather inconspicuous district."
