Where can I apply?
You can enrol for the insurance industry dual study program if you have concluded a training contract with one of our cooperating training companies. So the next step is your application! Find out more about what our cooperation partners have to offer HERE RIGHT NOW!
Profile of the study program
The insurance industry study program deals with questions such as
- What are the needs of insurance customers, and how are suitable insurance policies developed, calculated and marketed?
- What contribution can insurance companies make to sustainability and to what extent are they themselves affected by sustainability risks?
- How does the risk management of an insurance company work and what legal requirements must be met so that the value proposition to customers can be fulfilled in the long term?
Theory and practice through a three-pillar model
Dual study means that you study and train as an insurance and financial investment specialist at the same time. This is organized as a three-pillar model in which, in addition to the university of applied sciences and the insurance companies, the Berufsbildungswerk der Versicherungswirtschaft in Dortmund e.V. is involved.
Laying the foundations
In the first four semesters, you will learn the necessary economic, legal and mathematical/statistical basics. You will then specialize in the areas of product management and marketing, personnel management and sales, risk management in insurance companies and financial risk management. In the seventh semester, you will analyze an insurance industry problem in your Bachelor's thesis and develop your own recommendations and proposed solutions.
The dual study program lasts seven semesters and combines theory and practice very closely. Throughout the entire period, you will regularly alternate between the lecture hall and your workplace and put your academic findings from your studies directly into practice. During your studies, you will be employed by a cooperating training company, receive comprehensive support and an attractive salary. The following companies in the insurance industry cooperate with Fachhochschule Dortmund on the course:
- Continentale
- Ecclesia Group
- HDI AG
- Leue & Nill
- LVM Insurance
- Provinzial NordWest
- SIGNAL IDUNA Group
- VOLKSWOHL BUND Insurances
Structure of professional and academic careers
You will usually spend two days a week at Fachhochschule Dortmund and the rest of the time at the company. In your training company, you will work in various departments and areas, such as application and claims processing, customer service, marketing and human resources. Company assignments also take place during the semester break. Your academic and in-company training will be supplemented by inter-company instruction from the BWV in seminar blocks during the first five semesters. After 2.5 years of the dual study program, students take their final examination to become an insurance and financial investment clerk at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In accordance with the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), the in-company training ends when the examination is passed after the fifth semester. In the 6th and 7th semesters, students work as specialists in their company alongside their studies. The BWV also provides support during this phase with tailor-made further training.
Bachelor of Science and Management Assistant for Insurance and Financial Investments
After successfully completing the course, you will receive a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree after seven semesters and a Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) qualification in insurance and financial investments after five semesters.
This qualifies you for demanding tasks as a specialist in areas such as sales, marketing, controlling, product development or investments or as a manager.

Insurance Economics offers specializations in the following areas:
- Product management and marketing
- Personnel management and sales

What do I need?
1. qualification / certificates and degrees
The qualification for studying at universities of applied sciences is proven by the certificate of the university of applied sciences entrance qualification or a previous education recognized as equivalent.
Here you will find a detailed description of the various recognized qualifications.
2. proof of a concluded training contract
Further formal requirements for studying insurance at Fachhochschule Dortmund are
- a completed training contract as a business management assistant for insurance and financial investments
- as well as a sponsorship agreement with a company in the insurance industry with which Fachhochschule Dortmund has concluded a framework agreement on dual university education (cooperation agreement) and
- a training contract with the Berufsbildungswerk der Versicherungswirtschaft (BWV) e.V. on the components of inter-company training.
Once the training contract for insurance and financial investment clerks has been concluded with a cooperating company, two additional contracts are concluded with the training company and the Berufsbildungswerk der Versicherungswirtschaft (BWV) e.V. respectively. The sponsorship agreement with the training company regulates, among other things, the release of the dual student for lectures at Fachhochschule Dortmund and the assumption of costs for BWV training measures. In the first five semesters, BWV e.V. takes over the tasks of the vocational school and supports students in semesters 6 and 7 with the teaching of key qualifications. A contract is therefore concluded with the BWV. e.V. regarding the type and scope of the inter-company training.
The latter two contracts are an automatic consequence if the company intends the trainee for the dual study program. The future dual student does not have to apply for this separately.
It is advisable to apply for a training place or for a dual study program at the listed cooperation companies one year before the start of training.
