Factors that fundamentally and generally determine architecture are numerous and diverse, so it is necessary to combine these influencing factors thematically into a strong architectural concept that makes the realization of an "idea" of this complexity possible at all.
In order to do justice to this complexity of requirements, structural analyses are necessary in advance. A sensible methodological step and help in approaching the management and design of complex building tasks is first of all to learn to classify and see our built environment typologically.
In practice and preparation for conceptual design, an important basis in my teaching is the "analytical observation" of built objects that explain or conclusively represent a design process by way of example.
This makes it easier to understand a design
- Reason | prerequisite | dependency for the development (place, time, ...)
- Classification in the urban environment
- Typology | guiding idea
- Differentiated spatial experiences inside and outside
- sense of scale and proportion
- Internal organizational structure and its logical order
- Functions and their comprehensibility
- Structural relationships in relation to the design
- Design | surface texture | materiality in connection with the architectural concept
Projects
It is therefore important for the teaching of design and construction to convey a feeling for these dependencies, to exercise creative influence in the design process and to point out the design consequences.
Design projects should be set up in such a way that students learn to design on the basis of ideas and to let the design emerge not only from the synthesis of technical, scientific, functional and formal decisions, but also based on the local conditions, the beauty, conciseness and expression of the design means.
Smaller, manageable design themes, impromptu designs, student competitions as well as larger, complex construction tasks should be worked on independently in smaller design groups.
Accompanying
These tasks are thematically accompanied by seminar lectures on the respective design topic, individual corrections in the group, external lectures, exhibition visits (architecture, art, etc.), workshops, study exchanges, specialist excursions at home and abroad and the commitment of the students.
A public presentation | exhibition of the students' work is aimed at raising public awareness of the presence of the School of Architecture and the concept of building culture.

THE NEW HEART OF HIRSCHBERG
IP | A community space for young and old
Summer semester 2018
The citizens of Hirschberg want a new, attractive center in the center of their village that will act as a catalyst for the active village community for decades to come. One or more new identity-creating "village building blocks" are to be developed in a central location, on a plot of land measuring almost 5,000 square meters, which on the one hand tie in with the building culture of the village and the tradition of the village community, but at the same time also provide contemporary architectural answers to the complex new challenges of living and village services.
New ways of combining living, Business Studies and social interaction are to be made possible on the site. For example, a new village community center can help to ensure that local commitment and community-based processes remain anchored in the center of the village. Functions such as senior living, supplemented by a cultural meeting point or a small village shop/café are conceivable. (Room program is still in progress or can be designed or changed by you depending on the concept).
The urban environment directly adjacent to the site (square and streets) is to be designed so that the outdoor space supports the diverse range of offers and the various activities of the new center.
Present - Stage - Inform
WPM - IA | Exhibition Concepts FB Architecture
Summer semester 2018
The specific occasion was the design for an FB trade fair appearance for the IMM Cologne - at which numerous HS in the fields of architecture, design, interior design, etc. appear every year. This also involved the question of possible content - what and how could the Dortmund Department of Architecture present itself - and with what message. Furthermore, the subsequent use at another location, for example, was also to be reflected upon and examined.
The WEM - SA seminar was more conceptually oriented in the field of tension of temporary, mobile architecture. In addition to the functional arrangement and design, important assessment criteria were information content, appearance and staging.
DENKMAL VILLA - RESOURCE ARCHITECTURE
IP.MA - Extension | Conversion | Renovation
Winter semester 2017/2018
As part of the master's project "Resource Architecture", Fachhochschule Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts dedicated itself to a listed villa property - with the question of how we can deal with our architectural heritage in the future and carefully transform it into the present day - without negating existing traditions and values. All too often today we come across fashionable, interchangeable architecture - which is often created more for reasons of profit and less understood as a cultural, social task. So how can we "continue to build" history and develop it for the future?
It was about the preservation of cultural resources - but also about a future utilization proposal or new task for a former factory owner's villa and the redensification of the associated large park property - in the sense of a sustainable contribution to building culture.
VITAL CONVERSION
WPM - IA | Food and drink - Small canteen
Winter semester 2017/2018
A subordinate canteen area of the TU Dortmund University canteen (80 seats) is located in the basement of the main building and is currently not very attractive in terms of space. The VITAL menu offers pre-cooked, changing dishes of the day and a vegetable or salad buffet. The seminar takes the upcoming renovation as an opportunity to examine fictitious contemporary proposals for a new interior design with counter design, lamp and furniture designs, including the respective detailed examination of details, colors and materials.
In addition to the functional arrangement and design, the atmospheric and the spirit of the times were also important assessment criteria. Gastronomic themes for the cuisine and its presentation and serving were also to be considered. The results were presented to the head restaurateur and guests within the university framework.
BREAD & BUTTER
EW 1 | HOUSE OF THE GUEST
Winter semester 2017/2018
Architecture and cooking have a lot in common - "I can never prepare a good meal from bad ingredients - but I can very quickly cook a bad meal from good ingredients."
(Quote from a restaurateur)
This is also the case in architecture - there are too many "inferior materials on the market - which are then used to build bad houses." It is also the case that it is not that easy to build good houses with honest, solid materials. The seminar dealt with the topic of "cooking traditions" - a "house of the guest" was to be designed in an urban gap around the topic of "cooking" with a bread & butter restaurant, cooking events and a guest area.
Wait
SG | BusStop EFS
Winter semester 2017/2018
The topic of the standpipe - WAIT - should provide an opportunity to reflect on the topic of bus stops on the EFS campus and answer questions on the following topics:
- what does a bus stop/stop of the future look like ...
- how do they communicate university life ...
- can/must a bus stop do even more at this point ...
HOCH.HINAUS
IP | Fascination high-rise on Phoenix West
Summer semester 2017
In addition to economic, urban planning and global reasons - which can speak in favor of densifying our cities with high-rise buildings - people have always felt the urge to build higher and higher. Historical evidence of this can be found, for example, in the Tower of Babel, the Egyptian pyramids and the gender towers in Italy. However, these buildings were more symbolic than functional. The technical possibilities for truly tall functional buildings were only overcome in the late 19th century and led to the world's first modern skyscrapers from around 1870. From this time onwards, a competition began in Chicago and New York to see who could boast the tallest building in the city.
A fascinating history of high-rise construction began, coupled with technical innovations and stylistic epochs ranging from the "Chicago School" (Louis Sullivan) and Art Deco to classical modernism - the International Style and beyond, from the so-called High Tech style to postmodernism.
The integrated seminar (IP) shed light on the history (BG) of high-rise construction and, at the same time, a fictitious design for a high-rise building was to be developed as part of the Phoenix West master plan in Dortmund.
Working environments
EW3 | Office building at Phoenix Lake East
Winter semester 2016/2017
The urban planning basis for the "Arbeitswelten" design is the Phoenix See Ost master plan in Dortmund with its specifications and design guidelines. Notionally, a company was to be represented here and expressed creatively in the architectural implementation, which essentially requires a logical and Business Studies approach to the floor plan typology and the development of a functional and highly designed façade structure that links identity with the location as well as with the company.
Attention had to be paid to a flexible and cost-effective building and room system (grid). The focus of the seminar was also "the office as a workplace", and thus the examination of atmosphere, light and comfort on the one hand and office forms and their flexible use or subsequent use on the other.
DREAM in a TREE
WPM timber house | tree house project 1:1
Winter semester 2016/2017
In a private garden in Dortmund's Kreuzviertel district, a tree house is to be built for a family to enable their son to spend the night and play. During the seminar, ideas for the implementation were first sought and deepened in terms of construction. In a kind of WB - the best project - should be realized 1:1 on site in a later step. (independent of the technical examination!)
The results were personally presented to the client on site.
Visitor center
BZ on the EWI campus
Winter semester 2016/2017
Teaching and science thrive on international exchange and the opportunities it offers. The Fachhochschule Dortmund and its eight faculties - students, lecturers and numerous guests and university partners from all over the world - were tasked with dedicating a visitor center where mutual exchange can take place. Lectures, exhibitions and symposia will document the work of the faculties in public.
At the same time, an independent building is intended to give the Fachhochschule Dortmund more identity on campus and act as a resource for the university, the city and the region beyond the pure study program.
WaldesRuh
SG | Stegreif Overnight stay in the forest
Winter semester 2016/2017
On the impromptu theme - WaldesRuh - an "overnight stay in the forest" was to be developed to "arrive, relax, catch your breath etc." in a self-defined specific location. The number, size and scope were optional - whether several one-room apartments in the open countryside | nature or the small, fine forest hotel.
Cultural stage
WPM Timber Construction | Marienthal
Summer semester 2016
As part of the "Regionale 2012" - NRW, a "cultural stage" is to be developed in the town of Hamminkeln in the district of Marienthal in the open countryside as an event venue. In Marienthal, the "Marienthal Evenings" have been established as cultural days for years and offer numerous events. These range, for example, from fashion shows to markets to theater, dance or singing events. The floor plans (350-500 seats) should be able to react flexibly to this.
The cultural stage was to be developed as part of a brainstorming process - as a conceptual design concept in sustainable timber construction that also incorporates the landscape. The timber construction was explored in detail during the seminar. The project was accompanied by the local press and the cultural association and presented to the user on site as part of a small competition with book prizes.
Three students presented their design to a committee.
Common House - shared space
EW3 | Community center with agora
Summer semester 2016
For a small town in the Sauerland region, a citizens' forum with associated outdoor areas was to be designed in the center. By concentrating various social services, an intergenerational, intercultural meeting center for the citizens was to be created. The urban environment was also to be designed so that the outdoor space would support the diverse offerings and various activities of the citizens' forum and enhance the existing areas.
In addition to the overall concept of the building, which is intended to create a high degree of flexibility of use and quality in the interior and exterior space, another focus of the task was the in-depth elaboration of a spatial component and the development of a detailed square and open space concept.
Elective project based on realistic architects -WB | In-depth study of open space and IRG
The reconquest of the city
EW3 | Student WB | VfA 2015
"It's hard to imagine what a gift the 'car-friendly city' could be to a society that is saying goodbye to private transportation and is facing a density problem at the same time. It could steer re-urbanization and enable new typologies of density at the edges. Perhaps the 'car-friendly city' of yesterday will be the public space of tomorrow." [Quote from the awarding authority]
Since the 1970s, the relationship between the city and the automobile has once again been the subject of critical debate. The competition (VFA) gave students the opportunity to solve a realistic, manageable design task, taking into account urban planning, cost and ecological requirements, which focuses on the "reconquest of the city" from the automobile.
Quiet place - somewhere
SG | Stegreif
Winter semester 2015/2016
"A tea room is certainly a very appealing place, but even more so is the Japanese-style lavatory, which is designed in such a way that the mind finds peace in the truest sense. Such places are always separated in the shade of a bush, where the smell of green foliage and moss wafts towards you; ... There is hardly a place where you can feel this sense of well-being more clearly than the Japanese privy ..., which offers a view of the colors of the blue sky and the green foliage. And this requires - I repeat - a certain semi-darkness, thorough cleanliness and a silence that allows even the buzzing of a mosquito to reach the ear." [ J. Tanazaki]
A public restroom was to be designed in a self-defined specific location for the key theme - Quiet place | somewhere. The number, size and scope were optional - as was the LOCATION.
in the middle | bm competition 2015
EW2 | Integration of refugees
Winter semester 2015/2016
The integration of refugees, both spatially in the city center and socially in the middle of urban society, was the topic of the bm student competition. The aim was to find ways of providing alternative accommodation - to the usual homes - so as not to banish them to the periphery, to the countryside, but to find places for them in the middle of the city. Suitable extensions and conversions, gap-fillers, remaining spaces and conversions in the city were sought and worked on during the seminar.
Philip Klug's contribution, for example, shows the integration of a social education and meeting center with differentiated apartments in the context of the historic Samtweberviertel in Krefeld.

EW2 | Building gap Dortmund
Summer semester 2015
Today, more and more people are "on the move" for work - the range of accommodation on offer is usually large, but the quality is largely inadequate. The task was therefore to develop a hotel with a bar and restaurant for music lovers and business people in a vacant site opposite the Konzerthaus in Dortmund's Brückstraßen district. The architectural quality, style and atmosphere both inside and out and appropriateness in terms of function, form and choice of materials were the focus of the seminar, in addition to dealing with the relevant building regulations.
Place along the way
EW3 | Rest area Leucht
Summer semester 2015
The task was to develop an unmistakable place to stop - in an increasingly mobile society - somewhere on a 6-lane section of a federal highway, for example - in a specially defined context. The aim was to create a rest stop - a "place along the way" for a break and overnight stay that stands out typologically and in terms of design from the heterogeneous stylistic blossoms of the "usual rest stop landscape" in the sense of a sustainable building culture.
The work presented here, "Leucht", deals with the Japanese tradition of building tea houses and thus sensitively creates a conscious place of contemplation and tranquillity with overnight accommodation. It creates a convincing atmosphere that makes it possible to experience the natural space away from the highway through the chosen timber construction and the minimalist architectural language.

Courage to fill the gap in the village context
EW 2 | Hostel for wine tourists
Winter semester 2014/2015
The task was to design a house on the theme of wine - in a listed context to close a gap. Architectural solutions were to be developed in a narrow corset in this almost village-like gap, which react with sensitivity to the location and context with a view to the vineyards and traditions and show the new. The house should represent the "theme of wine" (store, bar on the ground floor) and enable tourists to stay overnight in the hostel at a reasonable price. In addition to dealing with the historical site, the seminar was also based on an examination of the legal requirements and the relevant building regulations.

FUTUR LIVING - Communal living in Japan
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2018
The thesis deals with future forecasts by trend researchers - the rapid growth of the world's population - and possible future forms of high-density living. A very densely populated neighborhood in Tokyo in a typical metropolitan area in Japan was chosen as the location and, based on analyses of traditional forms of housing in Japan, a new urban neighborhood was created.
The cell-like communal living in a confined space with shared infrastructure in point-shaped "green shelves" was the focus of the project. The lightness of the pavilion-like, tradition-oriented building types with atriums and the translucent building envelopes create an atmospheric and high-quality urban atmosphere despite the high density.
GYMNASIUM HERRSCHING - All-day school with sports hall
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2018
The task is based on a public WB - the new construction of a 3-stream grammar school with sports hall as an all-day school in Herrsching. On the one hand, the Upper Bavarian town on the Ammersee offers an attractive hillside location with a view of the lake - on the other hand, it was an urban planning challenge to integrate such large building volumes into the village's small-scale structures. The focus was on combining the varied and differentiated spatial program into manageable usable units and developing an exciting and atmospheric spatial concept for everyday school life.
POST.BORDER.LIBRARY - Checkpoint . 300 . Jerusalem . Bethlehem
Bachelor thesis in the winter semester 2017/2018
The thesis deals with the "vision of open borders" and positions itself in the large field of tension of political conflicts in the Middle East. A border location in Jerusalem was deliberately chosen - which was visited and explored in detail before working on the project. The design approach is based on the idea of peace in Jerusalem and enlightenment - the border is seen as open and replaces the former "8m high walls" with a park of remembrance with a library - which is intended to contribute to peaceful coexistence as a memorial and identity-forming building. The former border walls serve as a metaphor - and are aestheticized in the design - placed crosswise - and used again. The simple geometry and structure are intended to avoid any symbolism.
IN THE HEART OF THE CITY - A lively residential quarter in a historic district
Bachelor's thesis in the winter semester 2017/2018
At the intersection of two historic old town districts lies a derelict prime piece of land - right in the heart of Stuttgart - which was to be redesigned as a mixed residential quarter in the spirit of urban renewal.
The small but fine - densely built-up quarters have been able to retain their originality to this day and have a very special flair. In addition to green spaces, the Bohnenviertel is also home to affordable, social housing and offers its residents and visitors tranquillity and peace away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Based on historical maps and the history of the entire district, the diverse and lively quarter should be carefully developed further at this location. Retail in the first floor zones, as well as a district center with a café and public spaces for citizens - in addition to a differentiated range of housing for families, older people, couples or single people - were on the agenda.
METAMORPHOSIS - The crown tower in a new guise
Bachelor's thesis in the 2017/2018 winter semester
A former fortress-like storage tower of Dortmund's Kronenbrauerei brewery was to be developed together with the adjacent existing buildings into a new ensemble - living and working for the creative industries.
be developed. It was important in the concept to preserve the existing building in its basic structure and, with a few targeted interventions, to transform the bulwark into an exciting residential tower with infrastructure.
KULTURHAUS lit. RUHR - Library and media library in Duisburg
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2017
The ambitious project of a festival - lit. RUHR - became the occasion to make a cultural center with library, media library and event rooms the topic of the BA thesis. The thematic focus is on art, music and history. In addition to magazines, books, audio and music books, music journals and sound recordings, the library's collection will also include prints and rare pieces from the early days of printing. A special feature was to equip some of the areas with special rooms and services for the blind and visually impaired.
The aim was to create a cultural center in which a variety of functions and uses are interlinked, which is open to everyone and becomes a literary and cultural place.
AKG Sponsorship Award 2017 | ZURÜCK INS LEBEN - Psychotherapeutic Center for Children and Adolescents
Bachelor's thesis in the winter semester 2016/2017
Topic of the bachelor thesis was within a stud. Competition (AKG Förderpreis 2017) - to plan a center for the psychotherapeutic care and treatment of children and adolescents at a fictitious location.
The special atmosphere of the selected site at Dortmund's port lies in the heterogeneous neighborhoods of the port area with its transshipment points and large-volume commercial and industrial buildings and its location on the waterfront. In order to meet the complex functional requirements of therapeutic centers, clear spatial structures were required, which, in addition to a high quality of stay and a relaxed atmosphere, should also enable good orientation.
The work was awarded 1st prize in the WB - AKG Sponsorship Award 2017!(Opens in a new tab)
STADTHAUS - cultural and meeting center
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2016
A small multifunctional town hall (500-seat hall) was to be planned for the town of Wülfrath - in the heart of the town - for cultural events of all kinds. The building was also to offer an attractive space for catering and civic forums. The focus was on high functional and design quality, as well as the integration of the volume into the heterogeneous urban context.
POST.WAR.HOUSING.Syria - International student competition 2016
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2016
The bachelor thesis presented here deals with the post-war period in Syria and the vision of re-inhabiting the residential areas destroyed by terror.
Extensive research and analysis of traditional oriental-Islamic cities gave rise to the idea of adapting a neighborhood formation. This mosaic-like arrangement of individual houses, typical of the Arab world, became the basis for the urban design. The house typology of the traditional courtyard house was chosen due to the high emphasis on privacy in everyday oriental-Islamic life. Almost closed to the outside, it opens up generously to the inner courtyard and at the same time provides protection from prying eyes.
The result is a subtle work that deals fundamentally with traditional construction methods and foreign cultures and appropriately implements the aspect of building together by hand on site.
WATAN - A place of arrival
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2016
The term "Watan" goes back to the Arabic "homeland or fatherland". In the present design, the theme of "giving refugees a new home" is taken as the task. The Kadiköy district - with its cosmopolitan, multicultural atmosphere - on the Asian side of Istanbul was deliberately chosen as the location. A new place of arrival and refuge is being created - in the middle of a lively district with familiar elements from Arab building culture. The urban planning concept is designed in such a way that it could be transferred to many different parts of the city. In addition to traditional construction methods, "joint action" and "social interaction" form the basis of the multi-layered and sustainable design.
The result is a new neighborhood - as a place of refuge and "home" - that transports the atmospheric coexistence from "small to large" in a variety of ways and credibly conveys the concept of "home".

EMERGENCY CALL 112 - New fire station in Witten
Bachelor's thesis in the winter semester 2015/2016
A modern and future-oriented fire station was to be planned on a commercial site. The aim of the task was to develop an urban solitaire with the building arrangement and the open space concept and at the same time to design a highly functional building complex that does not implement the room program schematically, but rather shows convincing design and functional room structures.
BUTTERFLY PARADISE - Visitor Center in Cambodia
Bachelor's thesis in the summer semester 2015
In order to sustainably promote the development of an orphan village in Cambodia, a visitor center with a butterfly park was planned on the grounds of "Wat Preah Yesu" to learn about the nature and history of the village and the philosophy of the villagers. A butterfly garden, which is a common tourist attraction in many regions of Asia, was created as a special attraction. In addition to an education center with a cinema, the spatial program also includes a souvenir store with a café and differentiated outdoor areas.

CHILLIDAS RAUM | A monographic museum
Diploma thesis in the winter semester 2002/2003
Design of a monographic museum for the Basque sculptor and artist Eduardo Chillida in Münster.
After analyzing his work, a museum was designed based on this understanding. It was not only about the design of a pure exhibition space, but also about the realization of Chillida's understanding of space. Thematic complexes of his works were grouped into eight areas, as well as a temporary exhibition area, which can be experienced in a fixed tour through the museum.
